HISTORICAL CONSCIOUSNESS: 2012 – The U.S. embassy in Benghazi, Libya was attacked, resulting in four deaths and endless fake outrage by republicans. 2001 – Two hijacked aircraft crash into the World Trade Center in New York City, while a third smashes into The Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, and a fourth into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, in a series of coordinated suicide attacks by 19 members of al-Qaeda. In total 2,996 people are killed. In response we started two bullshit wars. I was at the Toronto Film Festival, in a movie when the first plane hit. 2001 - Henryk Siwiak, a Polish immigrant, was fatally shot on a street in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City, where he had mistakenly gone in order to start a new job. He was able to make it to the door of a nearby house before he collapsed. The killing remains unsolved; he has been described as "the last person to die in New York on 9/11" although his death was unrelated to the terror attacks. The initial investigation into the crime may have been hampered, police believe, by the diversion of law enforcement resources in the city in the wake of the terrorist attacks earlier that day, which ultimately killed almost 3,000 people. Since he was not robbed, wore camouflage clothing and spoke poor English with a heavy accent, detectives have speculated that his killer may have thought he had something to do with the attacks. Since the deaths from those attacks are not included in the city's official crime statistics, Siwiak's death is the only homicide recorded in New York City on that date. 1998 - Congress released Kenneth Starr's report, which offered graphic details of President Bill Clinton's alleged sexual misconduct and leveled accusations of perjury and obstruction of justice. Republicans still jerk off to that report. 1987 - Peter Tosh was shot and killed by robbers in his home in Jamaica. 1973 – A coup in Chile, headed by General Augusto Pinochet, topples the democratically elected president Salvador Allende. Pinochet exercises dictatorial power until ousted in a referendum in 1988, staying in power until 1990. 1971 - The Baker Street robbery was the burglary of safe deposit boxes at the Baker Street branch of Lloyds Bank in London, England. A gang tunneled 40 feet from a rented shop two doors away to come up through the floor of the vault. The property stolen was probably worth between £1.25 and £3 million; only £231,000 was recovered by the police. 1941 - Charles A. Lindbergh sparked charges of anti-Semitism with a speech in which he blamed "the British, the Jewish and the Roosevelt administration" for trying to draw the United States into World War II.
"Everybody’s worried about stopping terrorism. Well, there’s a really easy way: stop participating in it." Noam Chomsky
“You can figure out how bad a person you are by how soon after September 11th you masturbated, like how long you waited... and for me it was between the two buildings going down... I had to do it, otherwise they'd win.” Louis CK
"The reason I don't worry about society is, nineteen people knocked down two buildings and killed thousands. Hundreds of people ran into those buildings to save them. I'll take those odds every fucking day." Jon Stewart
“The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now — with somebody — and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives. It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy. … We are going to punish somebody for this attack, but just who or what will be blown to smithereens for it is hard to say. Maybe Afghanistan, maybe Pakistan or Iraq, or possibly all three at once. Who knows? Not even the Generals in what remains of the Pentagon or the New York papers calling for WAR seem to know who did it or where to look for them. This is going to be a very expensive war, and Victory is not guaranteed — for anyone, and certainly not for anyone as baffled as George W. Bush. All he knows is that his father started the war a long time ago, and that he, the goofy child-President, has been chosen by Fate and the global Oil industry to finish it Now. He will declare a National Security Emergency and clamp down Hard on Everybody, no matter where they live or why. If the guilty won’t hold up their hands and confess, he and the Generals will ferret them out by force.” Hunter S. Thompson
