HISTORICAL CONSCIOUSNESS: 2024 - The CEO of American health insurance company UnitedHealthcare Brian Thompson was assassinated by a masked gunman while attending a business conference in Manhattan. 2016 - A North Carolina man was arrested after he walked into a popular pizza restaurant Called Comet Ping Pong in Washington, D.C. carrying an assault rifle and started shooting. The man told police he had come to the restaurant to “self-investigate” a false election-related conspiracy theory involving Hillary Clinton that spread online during her presidential campaign. It all started in early November, when Clinton campaign manager John Podesta’s email was hacked and the messages were published by Wikileaks. One of the emails, according to The New York Times, was between Podesta and James Alefantis, the owner of D.C.’s Comet Ping Pong. The message discussed Alefantis hosting a possible fundraiser for Clinton. Users of the wack-o website 4Chan began speculating about the links between Comet Ping Pong and the Democratic Party with one particularly vile connection burbling to the surface: the pizzeria is the headquarters of a child trafficking ring led by Clinton and Podesta. Yes. The conspiracy theory that prominent members of the Democratic Party are somehow involved in a global child-trafficking ring took root on far-right conservative websites. The conspiracy theory linking this very false theory to Comet kicked around 4Chan until someone posted a long document with “evidence” to an alt-right section of Reddit several days before the U.S. election. 1993 - Joanna married Kenny. 1980 - The rock group Led Zeppelin announced it was disbanding after the death in September of drummer John Bonham. 1978 – Following the murder of Mayor George Moscone, Dianne Feinstein becomes San Francisco’s first female mayor. 1977 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers extend losing streak. Tampa Bay’s losing streak encompassed the entire 1976 season and was extended to 26 games the following season, a record that still stands in the NFL. 1971 - The Montreux Casino in Switzerland burnt to the ground during a show by Frank Zappa. The incident is immortalized by Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke On The Water’. In 1967 the Casino became the venue for the Montreux Jazz Festival, which was the brainchild of music promoter Claude Nobs. On the night of the blaze, Nobs saved several young people who, thinking they would be sheltered from the flames, had hidden in the casino from the blaze. A recording of the outbreak and fire announcement can be found on a Frank Zappa Bootleg album titled Swiss Cheese / Fire. 1969 – Black Panther Party members Fred Hampton and Mark Clark are shot and killed during a raid by 14 Chicago police officers. 1956 – The Million Dollar Quartet (Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash) got together at Sun Studio for the first and only time. 1864 – American Civil War: Sherman’s March to the Sea: At Waynesboro, Georgia, forces under Union General Judson Kilpatrick prevent troops led by Confederate General Joseph Wheeler from interfering with Union General William T. Sherman’s campaign destroying a wide swath of the South on his march to the Atlantic Ocean from Atlanta.
