HISTORICAL CONSCIOUSNESS: 2020 - Two men were charged with the death of Run-DMC member Jam Master Jay in Queens, New York. The killing had remained unsolved as a cold case for 18 years. 2012 - Pussy Riot were convicted of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred", and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. 1998 – Lewinsky scandal: US President Bill Clinton admitted in taped testimony that he had an "improper physical relationship" with White House intern Monica Lewinsky; later that same day he admitted before the nation that he "misled people" about the relationship. 1991 - Nirvana shot the video for “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in Culver City, California, costing less than $50,000 to make, the shoot features real Nirvana fans as the audience. 1985 – The Hormel strike begins in Austin, Minnesota. 1980 – Azaria Chamberlain disappeared, at Ayers Rock, Northern Territory, probably taken by a dingo, leading to what was then the most publicized trial in Australian history. 1969 - The Woodstock Music and Art Fair concluded. During the three day festival there were three deaths, two births and four miscarriages. 1908 - Fantasmagorie is a French animated film by Émile Cohl. It is one of the earliest examples of traditional (hand-drawn) animation, and considered by film historians to be the first animated cartoon. It’s 1 minute, 45 seconds long. 1907 – Pike Place Market, a popular tourist destination and registered historic district in Seattle, opened. 1894 - The Tariff Act of 1894 signed into law imposed the first federal income tax on corporations, which included exemptions for nonprofit corporations and charitable institutions.
